Gender and the Management of Schools in Uganda |

Abstract: In order to transform and develop society evenly, women who are the more abundant members of society need to be educated and allowed to assume positions of power in all organizations, education inclusive. This study dealt with the concept of gender and its influence on the management of educational institutions in Uganda. This arises from the fact that although women form the largest proportion of the population in Uganda, they are least represented and participate in Educational Management.
The main objectives of this study were to find out whether: managers in different school environments differed in their gender role concepts; gender could influence a managers management style and consequently the overall performance of the school; management styles could influence performance rating of the managers: and male and female school managers varied significantly on their management styles of schools. One hundred male and sixty female heads and their deputies in primary and post primary educational institutions through out the country formed the main population of this study. Two types of research questionnaires were used in the study. Questionnaire A was administered to the school managers. Instrument B which was administered to the subordinates also had sections on subordinate bio-data. It was a modification of the Leadership Behaviour Description Questionnaire (LBDQ) based on Ohio State Studies (1962).
The findings of the study revealed that attitudes towards sex role in society especially in educational circles were changing to more egalitarian roles. The change was noticed to slightly much more in men
